United States Naval Academy - Midshipman Night

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. Want help finding a job? The City and the Chamber are partnering to present the first semi-annual RSM JOB FAIR to be held Wednesday October 22, 2008 at the Bell Tower Regional Community Center. Many local employers will be there to promote local part time, full time, temporary, seasonal & volunteer positions available and interview applicants. Some employers will be hiring on the spot.

Free Aptitude Test October 15th

For: Parents of Juniors and Seniors:

A free aptitude test will be given to 11th and 12th grade students on Wednesday, October 15th from 8:40am to 11:30am, in the Tesoro High School Library.

Tesoro High School endorses this test as an additional method for students to learn about their vocational aptitudes. The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a group of ten tests designed to measure a student’s aptitude in five separate career field areas and also provides an indication of academic aptitude. The ASVAB is an extensively researched test battery developed by experts in the testing field, counselors, and educators. Students will be given the option of whether to release or not release information to recruiters.

The test is administered as a courtesy of the Armed Forces at no cost or obligation to the student. This test is appropriate for all students and we believe your child will be better able to define his/her career choices based on this test. Each student will receive a copy of his/her test scores along with an interpretation approximately three weeks after the test. The interpretation includes a career survey, which when coupled with the aptitude results, enables the student to focus in on possible careers and college majors.

In the changing world today, it is imperative that our young people have every opportunity made available to them in which to explore their options for a promising and rewarding future. If your son/daughter is interested, please complete the form below and have them return it to the Tesoro High School Career Center by Friday, October 10th. Or, you can email the coordinator of the testing, Anne Moore at almoore@capousd.org, giving your permission for your student to take the test.

Obtaining Work Permits During Summer

Work permit applications may be picked up in the career center through Friday, June 27. Work permits applications can also be downloaded at: http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/dlseformB1-1.pdf. After that time, work permit applications will only be processed at specific locations according to the following schedule:

Monday, June 30 through Thursday, July 31:

  • Mondays from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at Tesoro High School
  • Tuesdays from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at Dana Hills High School
  • Wednesdays from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at Capistrano Valley High School
  • Thursdays from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at San Clemente High School

All District offices will be closed on Fridays in July. No work permits will be processed on Fridays in July.

Monday, August 4 through Friday, August 22:

  • Work permit applications will be processed in your school’s front office from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.

All District offices will be closed on Friday, August 1 and August 8. No work permits will be processed on Friday, August 1 and August 8.

Monday, August 25 through Friday, August 29:

  • Work permit applications will be processed in your school’s Career Center.

REMINDERS:

  • Applications must be signed by the employer and include the name of the workmen's compensation insurance carrier.
  • A parent or guardian must also sign the application.
  • A social security number is required to process a work permit.
  • Students need to bring the application to the designated location, according to the schedule above.
  • Every effort will be made to process permits quickly, but figure one day to process your work permit.
  • The completed work permit is picked up by the student and taken to his/her employer.
    Each new job requires a new work permit. The permit is made out to the employer. It's the Law!

California law requires any student under the age of 18 to obtain a work permit. The hours a student may work vary according to age.

  • 15 years and under: 3 hours on any day that precedes a school day, 18 hours a week maximum OR May not work past 7:00 p.m.
  • 16 years and over: 4 hours on any day that precedes a school day, 28 hours a week OR May not work past 10:00 p.m.

Work permit applications may be found outside the career center or in the main office. You can also download and print it at http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/dlseformB1-1.pdf.

  3. Parent statement signed by one parent or guardian
  4. Complete social security number
  5. Student must have a GPA of 2.0 or above

These Workshops are being offered in a joint venture by the Transfer Center and the Honors Program to share information with students and their parents regarding the Honors Program requirements and benefits. One benefit of the Honors Program is how honors students are eligible for guaranteed or preferential admission with several universities, particularly UCLA.

The Orange County National College Fair is Sunday, April 6 from 1:30-4:30pm at the Orange County Fair and Exposition Center. College Representatives from schools all over the country will be present to answer your college questions. This is your best opportunity to gather information on a vast array of colleges and meet face-to-face with representatives from across the country. Attendees at the fair will receive information on college choices, financial aid, NCAA rules and regulations, test prep, and transferring from two to four year colleges. Summer Youth Education Conference

The office of the Orange County District Attorney is now accepting applications for the Summer Youth Education Conference. This program is an intensive week-long summer program focusing on the criminal justice system. Students must be at least 15 years old and are interested in either pursuing a career in any area of the criminal justice system or learning about the role of local law enforcement agencies.

This summer conference provides an informative overview of criminal cases, from the time a crime is reported, to the trial, and on through the sentencing. Participants have the opportunity to interact with professional in all areas of the criminal justice system. In addition to workshops, field trips to local courts, police departments, and training facilities are included. Students will end up with a better understanding of the criminal justice system and the role of the District Attorney’s Office.

Students are required to commit to the week-long program on August 4-8, 2008, and must attend a mandatory orientation workshop on Thursday, May 1, 2008. Students will be selected from high schools throughout Orange County to participate in this exciting program. If accepted, students will have to pass a criminal background check.

The applications process is simple, but highly competitive. Applications are available in the Tesoro Career Center or online at www.orangecountyda.com. Prospective applicants need to complete the application and a one page essay explaining why they are interested in attending the Summer Youth Education Conference. All applications must be received by 5:00pm on Tuesday April 1, 2008, via mail, hand delivery, or online application.

Students selected to participate in the program will be notified either by mail, email, or phone on or before Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

Work Permits

WHAT IS A WORK PERMIT AND WHERE CAN I GET ONE?
A work permit is a legal document required by the state of California that allows a person less than 18 years of age to hold a job. You may get a work permit from the Tesoro High School Career Center. There are four steps in obtaining a work permit: (1) Ask for a work permit application in the Career Center, Guidance Office, or go to www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/dlseformB1-1.pdf and download the application. (2) Fill out the personal information at the top of the application, have the employer fill out the information required in the middle portion and have one parent sign the bottom portion of the application. (3) Return the completed work permit application to the Tesoro High School Career Center where the work permit will be processed. Please allow 24 hours to process the Work Permit. (4) Bring the completed work permit back to your employer.
AT WHAT AGE CAN I GET A WORK PERMIT?
Minors ages 12 through 17 are required to get work permits before starting a job. A minor under the age of 12 cannot receive a work permit except in the entertainment industry. There are a few exceptions to these rules. No work permit is required for the following jobs: (1) certain agricultural industry jobs, (2) odd jobs in private homes such as gardening and babysitting, (3) newspaper delivery jobs, and (4) self-employment.
DOES A WORK PERMIT REQUIRE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE?
Minors under 18 years old must attend school to get a work permit. If a student graduates from high school before age 18, he or she no longer needs a work permit. If a student passes the high school proficiency exam or the G.E.D. before 18 years old, he or she no longer needs a work permit. Minors under 18 years of age who have dropped out of school must be enrolled in continuation or adult school classes for at least four hours per week before getting a work permit. Emancipated minors must attend school in order to get a work permit. They are still required to get a work permit before being employed but may obtain the work permit without parent consent and signature.
CAN A WORK PERMIT BE TAKEN AWAY?
Yes, the work permit can be cancelled and taken away at any time by a high school administrator. In addition, a work permit can be cancelled at a parent’s request with good reason. Good reasons for canceling a work permit include: job does not fit legal requirements, hours scheduled create a truancy or absentee problem for the students, or job is causing student to fail classes at school.
WHEN DOES A WORK PERMIT EXPIRE?
A minor must obtain a work permit for each job. A work permit is no longer valid (or expires) when a minor quits or leaves a job. A new work permit application must be filled out for each new job. In addition, all work permits in the state of California expire five days after the opening of school in the fall. This is to insure that all minors report to school in the fall before continuing to work after summer vacation. Therefore, if a minor obtained a job and work permit in June and still had that same job in September, the work permit would expire. The minor would have to obtain a new work permit for the new school year even though it was for the same continuing job.

On the left side of the screen you will see 11 categories you can use to customize your search. Once you enter information into the program you will see under "Criteria Selected" the number of colleges found. You can then click on "Display Colleges" and get a list of colleges that meet the criteria you entered. If you want to know more about a particular college on the list, double click on the college name and a full college profile of the college will come up including web address with a direct link to the college website.

The website also includes Assessment, Occupational Search, Financial Aid Information, Quick Search, Video Library, and Feedback. Just follow the directions!
